Fish Fry Fridays – St. Andrews, Lemay

If I was a Catholic, my home parish would be St. Andrews, right down the street.  It’s a beautiful church with a rich history that you can read about here.  Seeing as Andrew was a fisherman, it’s fitting for St. Andrews to have a lenten fish fry!  It’s been a go-to of ours for years.  While it has changed a bit, (no more jack salmon, no more separate take out line), it’s still a solid fry worth supporting.

Photo Mar 28, 5 54 04 PMSince I was still getting over a cold, we opted for take out this week.  Cod and cat are the game here.  Cod is a frozen square, my husband proclaimed it not over cooked and average.  We both thought the catfish filets were the better choice.  Slightly spiced cornmeal style breading fried into a lovely, crispy crust encasing juicy, firm fish.  Perfectly cooked.  Perhaps the biggest advantage of takeout was being able to top this prefect fish the way God intended – with freshly sliced onion and hot sauce.  Add soft white bread and it’s the best sandwich ever.  Sides here are basic, sweet red spaghetti, green beans (see previous rant), slightly sweet no-mustard potato salad, slaw and mac ‘n’ cheese.  While the potato salad isn’t bad, skip it.  Also skip the spaghetti, beans and slaw.  Go for double mac ‘n’ cheese; it is fantastic.  Home made, creamy, super cheddary, with a thick layer of cheddar baked into a bubbly, brown crust on top.  The line ladies cut each serving off with a sharp spatula as you order it, so everyone gets a share of that coveted top.  Trust me, double mac.

Dessert is included in the meal and the choices are varied and home made.  Cherry pie, red velvet cake, coconut toast, chocolate brownies, strawberry shortcake, orange bunt cake, cookies, chocolate cake, and my favorite cake, lemon.  It was a huge piece and super moist (was it a pudding cake?) with fluffy lemon frosting.  A great way to top off a comfort food meal.  Just what the doctor ordered.
